Temple travel is the one kind of India trip where the schedule genuinely cannot be moved. Darshan timings, closing hours and festival days are fixed, and a route that ignores them turns a devotional journey into a queue.
Start with timings, then draw the route
Sequence temples by their timings, not by geography. A slightly longer drive that reaches an open temple is better than a short one that arrives at a closed door.
Rest is part of the plan
- Two temples in a day is often plenty, especially with elders.
- Keep the middle of the day free — heat and crowds both peak.
- Stay close to the temple where possible; short walks beat long transfers.
Festival days change everything
Full moon days, festival dates and auspicious months transform crowd levels, accommodation availability and driving times. They can be extraordinary experiences — but they need to be planned for deliberately, not stumbled into.
